A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Politicians are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation presented on Monday would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
